going, going.. back, back.. to--ERRG!!!

I guess I spoke too soon.

Sorry I haven't posted in a while, folks. It's been getting crazy around here.

Anyway, I hope that all is well... A few HUGE updates:

UC REGENTS PROPOSE TO RAISE THE MINIMUM GPA REQUIREMENT FROM 2.8 TO 3.1

The UC Regents have an important and controversial item on their agenda for the July Regents' meeting, which will take place THIS Wednesday and Thursday of this week. The proposal, Item 302, will increase the minimum grade point average of the UC Eligibility Index from 2.8 to 3.1. Because of its potential impact on educational access, the UC Students' Association, California State Senator Chesbro and Assemblymember Steinberg, and community-based organizations urge the Regents to delay their vote on the item until further research into its ramifications and further student and community input can be gathered.

Item 302 responds to the results of a study that CPEC released to the Regents in May. CPEC found that 14.4% of California high school graduates are currently eligible for admission to the UC. In light of this year's enrollment cuts and because the California Master Plan for Higher Education only mandates the University to admit the top 12.5% of high school graduates, the systemwide Academic Senate voted to endorse Item 302. However, while the Academic Senate considers Item 302 to have the least impact on under-served students at UC, Item 302 will directly affect alternative means of admissions--including Eligibility in Local Context (ELC)--which increase access to higher education for these students.

So, what can you do???

Send a letter to Gerald Parsky, Chair of the Board of Regents, urging him to delay voting on Item 302 until all major stakeholders in the University have had the opportunity to respond; and,

Attend the meeting of the Board of Regents at UCSF on Wednesday, July 14th to make a public comment registering your desire to maintain access to the UC.

Lets get to it, friends!
