The Cornerstone

Touring Pittsburgh yesterday, I realized that there is much that this city can improve upon. The Smoky City, they called it. It was a place that neglected the beauty of its natural surroundings for the great riches that could be found in steel. This resource that ruined the region only ruined the beautify of nature. Yet, there are times when manmade structures can hold much beauty...

This July 4th weekend reminded me of the events of 9/11. This day in our world changed the way that our government operated... More interestingly, however, it changed the way that many people in our nation think. And, this thinking has proliferated into our everyday culture. It amazes me how the rhetoric of the past has rekindled itself in today's society. The mistakes of Vietnam, the Korean War, etc... It's as if America--at least our great leaders in search of weapons of mass destruction--has not learned from history. We record this stuff, right?

We talk about this in class, but we always come to the same conclusion... They've learned nothing.

I hope that another 9/11 will not have to happen in order for anyone to learn. Is it true that in times of tragedy, we truly learn? Is this what it truly takes for anyone to make a change in the world?

As the cornerstone is laid, I hope that this will remind all of us that we can make a difference in the world. We must not be discouraged by the people in power.



Surely, they may be dumb, but they're really starting to get to us. We're becoming confused, and some of us are beginning to find that this type of living is "okay." The most I can say is: Think different. Do not be affraid of making change or questioning the status quo. In fact, challenge that what you know. On this July 4th, take your family and friends out to watch Farenheit 9/11. For this will be the cornerstone in setting our nation free. Just open your eyes, people. Change must come soon.
